Having withstood the test of time, the SM58 DJ microphone from Shure still stands tall
Whenever you’re talking about any kind of DJ product, whatever it is, everybody knows the classics inside out. Most people love them, that’s why those particular DJ products are the classics. Lots of people have written DJ equipment reviews about them so that other people will know how good the classics are. If I’ll ask a working DJ to name a classic DJ product, most people will jump straight to the famous 1200 Technics DJ turntables. But that’s because DJs always use turntables, but rarely use DJ microphones. Those who use DJ microphones however, might have a tough time choosing between the 1200 and the SM58 DJ microphone from Shure as their favorite classic DJ product.
In the area of DJ microphones, the Shure SM58 is equal and more than the 1200 for DJ turntables. More because while the 1200 got a little old these days and it shows its age compared to the newer, better DJ equipment, the SM58 stands as tall today as it was tens of years ago. There simply isn’t a better quality in a vocal DJ microphone at this price, and that has a proven track record in the real clubs and studios.
Ask any working DJ who’s used DJ microphones a bit in his life, and the SM58 will probably find its way into the conversation. The SM58 DJ microphone is simply a unidirectional cardioid dynamic microphone that’s designed from scratch to be used in for any kind of applications as long as it has to do with vocals. Its flexibility is immense, given the SM58 has a knack for getting just the right tone in clarity and removing any unwanted noise besides the vocals, no matter what the stage is. Equally suitable for live performances, sound reinforcement or even the more accurate studio recording, the SM58 satisfied specialists and working DJs over and over again throughout the years.

The SM58’s tailed vocal response is today’s world standard by a long distance as far as reproducing and recording singing or speech is concerned. Shure built into the SM58 an effective spherical filter to keep out wind, breath and that annoying popping noise that other lower quality microphones do. The cardioid pattern isn’t anything new for working DJs using DJ microphones, and it does the trick in the SM58 as well, keeping background noise at bay. And one of the most important tests the SM58 DJ microphone had to pass was the durability it needed to sustain regular working DJ use, night in, night out.
That’s where Shure hit the jackpot with the SM58 DJ microphone, as countless DJ product reviews tell DJs all over the world that the SM58 performs. Always, under any circumstances, outdoors or inside clubs, even with the rough handling DJ microphones sometimes get, the SM58 never stops performing. Here’s a bit of what makes it perform as it does:
- a pneumatic shock mount system, also a classic in itself, that minimizes handling noise
- hard steel mesh grille keeping the SM58 safe under any conditions
- the SM58 comes with a break resistant stand adapter that working DJs can rotate 180 degrees
- into the technical aspects, the SM58 also impresses, with a frequency response from 50 Hz to 15 kHz
- impedance is 150 ohms
- connects through a regular 3 pin male XLR type connector
- is specifically built for vocal recordings of all kinds and in any circumstances, and it can’t be beat
- weights just under 300 grams, that’s 10.5 ounces, and it won’t give anyone a sore arm
