Chris Moyles, the BBC Radio 1 breakfast DJ record

by Marius on Sep.13, 2009, under News, Stories

Chris Moyles is now the longest serving breakfast DJ on BBC Radio 1

In this fast shifting, rapidly changing world, it’s not uncommon to hear that your favorite DJ, be it a club or a radio DJ switches jobs, companies and audiences. There are a ton of reasons why that could happen, and I’m not going to go into those right now, but it is uncommon not only to have a regular DJ on air that you like, but to be able to identify the certain show that he’s doing with him. That’s about what’s happening with listeners of Chris Moyles’ breakfast show on BBC Radio 1, since he’s been under duty longer than anybody else before him.

Chris Moyles’ record breaking radio DJ-ing is all the more impressive, since BBC Radio 1 isn’t what you would call your backwater radio station, it’s one where the ratings are big, and if they drop, then most likely the DJ’s out. So there’s a lot of pressure on the radio DJ in such a situation, but until now, Chris Moyles seems to be handling it just fine, as he’s performing the breakfast show since 2004, when he got the position. Before that, he’s worked at BBC Radio 1 ever since 1997, working on the 4 am hour slot, but he had his eyes on the breakfast show all the time.

With good reason too, because since Chris Moyles took over the breakfast slot from Sara Cox, his air time has been extended twice and he’s boosted the show’s audience from 5.5 millions of listeners per week (that a lot of people as it is) to its current level of 7.3 million people tuning in to his breakfast show on BBC Radio 1 every week. Probably his zoo-style designed show earned him some loyal fans, but the numbers are there, and Chris Moyles’ team is also the same ever since they started, which shows they must be doing something right.

The previous record holder was Tony Blackburn, and current listeners of BBC Radio 1’s radio DJs probably won’t be familiar with the name, since it happened more than 30 years ago. At that time, Tony Blackburn gave up the breakfast show at age 29, saying that he was married and didn’t fit the image anymore, since BBC Radio 1 is trying to attract mainly teenager audience, but with times changing, Chris Moyles, who’s now 35 years old doesn’t feel the same at all. Actually he recognizes it himself that  "the truth is it’s great".

Some of the hard facts about Chris Moyles’ breakfast show as a radio DJ on BBC Radio 1 are:

  • he’s clocked up over 2073 days on the job
  • he even took a 30% pay cut three months ago due to BBC crisis politics
  • as Chris Moyles said : "No-one likes to take a pay cut, but I want to work at the BBC, which is trying to save some of its gazillions."
  • boosted audience from 5.5 million to 7.3 millions
  • some controversy ensued as well, about Moyles’s jokes about Auschwitz or gay singer Will Young

Moyles and his team are celebrating the milestone in Plymouth, at the start of a tour of Britain. They will travel to Cardiff, Leeds and Glasgow before returning to London, and you can still hear him every day on BBC Radio 1’s breakfast show, now holding the longest running radio DJ of the show title under his belt.
