Vestax PMC-06 Product Review

Skinny has never looked so good

Young Hollywood’s made "skinny" about as appealing as a meal of mushy peas and toad. Well, we sure can’t say the same thing for DJ equipment. In the DJ community, skinny has never looked so damn good. Thanks to Vestax and their PMC-06 mixer, working DJs now have a "roomier" way to mix. While most DJs won’t think there’s much going on with the PMC-06, it has a price that all are sure to love.

Vestax’s PMC-06 Pro VCA mixer was designed with an unusually slim build, thus reducing the space when working DJs nestle it between two tables. Vestax is proud of this reduction, and with good reason, as it increases the DJ’s ability to perform other tricks–such as juggling–in a big way. Among that, it offers a decent amount of input and outputs, a light-as-feather feel and 2 band EQ. If you’re into a number of styles, wait a minute before you pull out the plastic! This is a mixer that’s great for scratching DJs. With functions that are ideal for speed cuts and "dynamic scratching", it’s no wonder the PMC-06 has been a staple in most scratching DJs packages.

The above may sound pretty appealing, but this mixer isn’t all that and a bag of chips. The "skinny" on the Vestax PMC-06 is this: while it’s sporting a nice price and is a beautiful piece of equipment for bedroom DJs, every working DJ who purchases it has to take heed of its many hindrances. If you don’t (and decide to purchase this mixer) you’ll be in for a huge disappointment. After reviewing this product, I’ve realized why Vestax made it so much lower than the majority of their mixers. Actually…after reviewing this product, I’m surprised it’s not even lower.

With that been said, the PMC-06 isn’t bad. Sure, it’s a pretty loud mixer and working DJs can’t scratch in their headphones (which many have placed as their top complaint), but Vestax designed the PMC-06 with a fairly solid build (made out of metal) and, in their most recent version, have given it a cosmetic update most working DJs can’t resist. Polished in sleek black, it has a nice look and feel, even if it functions like an old school mixer. Did I also mention that, when it comes to juggling, the PMC-06 is the best in its class? It gets some pretty harsh reviews, but in essence, this mixer is not so bad after all.

Needless to say, the PMC-06 PRO needs more than a cosmetic upgrade. And until Vestax can give it what it needs and what the working DJ wants, then it should lower the already low price. But if that doesn’t happen, and you’re a DJ who isn’t impressed, there’s always the equally as slim and much cheaper Stanton SK-1 to pick from.
