Ultrasone Proline 650 DJ headphones

Wearing headphones can’t get much better than the Proline 650
I like companies dedicated to what they do, and audio companies even more, since sound is such a big part of our lives, not to mention it basically is the life of a working DJ. And out of a lot of dedicated sound companies, German engineering has started making a name for itself with brands like Sennheiser or now, Ultrasone. Sennheiser is pretty much known throughout the working DJ world, but Ultrasone deserves at least the same amount of recognition, and no DJ product is better to affirm that than the Ultrasone Proline 650 DJ headphones.
The Proline headphones are different from the Ultrasone DJ headphones series in that the "pro" really stands for professional and not an inch less. The Proline 650 is top quality DJ equipment and audio technology at its best, offered mainly to professional DJs rather than starter DJs, mostly due to the high price (around 250$). You can rest assured that the Proline 650 DJ headphones makes up for each penny, but if you’re just starting out, that might be too big of an investment for just your DJ headphones for monitoring purposes.
The Proline 650 is quite a DJ product, featuring top quality sound reproduction, but it’s the technologies inside the DJ headphones that make them really special. First, the Ultrasone S-Logic Natural Surround Sound, which is a marvel of audio engineering, to say the least. Proline 650 is able of giving true surround sound only through a pair of headphones with no other DJ products attached. This S-Logic Natural Surround Sound on the Proline 650 somehow (don’t ask me the details, it’s company secret) moves the sound from inside the working DJ’s head outside, making it natural and even giving the feel of direction and distance to the sound.

The S-Logic Surround Sound also permits the lowering of the sound intensity by an astonishing 40% to reach the same loudness, which is amazing and also greatly decreases the risk of hearing damage, while making the Proline 650 ideal if you spend lots of times with your DJ headphones on. The S-Logic is that much harder to obtain on the Proline 650 as they are basically closed back DJ headphones, practically blocking all sound from the exterior. This is hugely important in monitoring, where the working DJ needs to be able to recognize what’s in his headphones and what’s outside.
The Proline 650 package for the professional working DJ will include:
- the actual Proline 650 DJ headphones
- conveniently, not one but 2 detachable cable, one straight and 3 meters long, the other coiled and longer than 3 meters (stretchable), both with gold plated 6.3 mm jacks. The working DJ should have the Proline 650 cover all his situations in the same professional manner
- a gold plated 6.3 to 3.5 mm adapter
- a spare pair of speed switch ear pads, just in case the first one encounters an unpleasant accident
- a demo CD and the instruction manual (imagine how complex the Proline 650 are if Ultrasone comes with a manual just for them)
Proline 650 have been made from scratch to serve long-hours with DJ headphones on working DJs or sound specialists, and as such, Ultrasone has taken all precautions to ensure the ultimate safety for their customers. No matter how many nights a working DJ spends wearing the Proline 650, the MU metal shielding is bound to stop 98% of all radiation and magnetic fields that meet the DJ’s ears, thus making it safe for him in the long term. This ULE (Ultra Low Emissions) technology really sets Proline 650 apart from other DJ headphones, even more so since it’s been recognized and recommended by "technical surveillance organizations" (this is from the Ultrasone website, so ask them which those might be, because I’m clueless).
A bit on the technical side of the Proline 650 (link to PDF information sheet) now, to see if these DJ headphones offer the sound they should for the price:
- the S Logic Surround Sound ensures a dynamic, live and clear sound
- the frequency response is from 10 Hz to 25 kHz
- the impendance of 75 ohms
- sond pressure level of 95 dB
- a gold plated 40mm driver
- the MU metal bufferboard for low emissions
All in all the Proline 650 from Ultrasone are a spectacular piece of DJ equipment, with utmost care taken for the safety of the working DJ and the state of the art technology to ensure a great sound. And besides all that, the weight of 295 grams and the availability of spare parts for your Proline 650 makes it a worthy long term investment for any professional working DJ.
