Stanton RM 406 DJ mixer

The RM 406 DJ mixer is for the DJ who wants it all

Stanton provides great quality DJ products and the DJ equipment review out there show it. They also strike a good balance between price and quality, and you definitely don’t pay as much of a premium as you do in the case of Pioneer DJ products, for instance. Having managed to keep their top spot in the eyes of working DJ for a long time now, Stanton doesn’t stir the amount of mixed emotions DJs have about Numark, as another example. This makes Stanton a DJ product brand worth looking, especially when they release new products. The best way to introduce the new RM 406 DJ mixer from Stanton, the subject of this DJ equipment review is to link you to another post on one of my previous Stanton DJ product reviews, say the M303 DJ mixer, also sporting the SST technology.

Now the RM 406 features the same Superior Sound Technology from Stanton, already famed by now in the minds of working DJs who have tried it. SST just makes your DJ mixer act like it should. Superior Sound Technology not only gives your clubbing mixer the sound quality of studio DJ mixers working in controlled conditions, but it also makes mixers like the RM 406 act like they’re supposed to. Working DJs can say goodbye to half kills when the kill switch doesn’t really KILL anything but its self respect or to the nasty bleeding between channels. The SST advantages are many, but these are the most important, and I’m also hoping to dedicate a different post to it alone, so I’ll not spoil it further.

Stanton RM 406 DJ mixer with everything a DJ needs in the club, SST making it studio worth too

The RM 406 DJ mixer is about much more than the SST technology alone. It’s a 4 channel mixer that has everything a clubbing DJ ever needs and more. Stanton put their new RM 406 into a 5 units of rack space chassis and it’s connections are definitely up for rack mounting, as the RM 406 supports massive DJ setups. Each of the 4 channels has a dedicated 3 band EQ with kill switches that cut the sound like it has a pair of scissors for it. The crossfader is fully assignable and has curve controls and fade start functions to allow working DJ with all the flexibility they need.

As far as effects are concerned, while the RM 406 offers you all the regular stuff DJs are used to in DJ equipment reviews, it has FX send and return connections that allow for adding multiple separate sound effects to your mix. An FX loop function is also available, and as long as we’re talking about the eye catching stuff, let’s not forget the new illuminating on the RM 406. It sports new diffused LED indicators and backlit cue buttons which are easy to view in any environment, but it also integrates the new Illumiknobs technology, which basically just uses colored lights behind the knobs to show DJs their exact positions in the dark. So simple, and yet, believe me, so effective.

Some of the important technical features the RM 406 DJ mixer offers to working DJs are:

  • the RM 406 has an incredible 10 line/CD inputs and 4 phono inputs
  • master output (either XLR balanced or 1/4"), zone output (1/4" balanced or RCA), booth and record outputs in RCAs and 1/4" and 1/8" connectors for your DJ headphones. Tell me there’s something the RM 406 missed…
  • if you’d say a XLR subwoofer output with sweepable crossover, you’d be wrong
  • the RM 406 also supports up to 3 microphones through the 3 inputs (2 XLRs and 1/4"), all with 3 band EQ and voice over function
  • you can even connect an iPod to your RM 406 just like that, through the dedicated minijack that overrides line no.5 (just so you don’t freak out)
  • the frequency response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz, +/- 1.5 dB
  • signal to noise ratio is greater than 110 dB
  • and finally, the 5 units in your DJ rack translate to dimensions of (LxWxD) 18.9 in. x 8.7 in. x 5.25 in. (48 cm. x 22 cm. x 13 cm.)
  • and a weight of 9.2 lbs (or 4.2 kgs), reasonable for the mobile DJ, but definitely suited as a tabletop mixer

All in all, the RM 406 is a great piece of DJ equipment and the DJ product reviews should tell you that, along with a not so out of bounds price of about 500$ on the street. Definitely worth a shot if you can try the RM 406 first, but it’s also worth the money.
