DJ Richie Hawtin thrown out of Berghain club

by Marius on Oct.14, 2009, under News, Stories

The famed working DJ Richie Hawtin was reportedly hustled out of the Berghain nightclub in Berlin

It happens to the best of us sometimes, and working DJs are no exception, it seems. Although things behind the DJ booth should be fairly calm and relaxed compared to things on the dance floor, where all the jumpers and dancers are, DJ Richie Hawtin experienced that the jurisdiction (if I may use such an official word) of the club guards extends even beyond that curtain or whatever divides the backroom and DJ booth from the main floor. Unfortunately, DJ Richie Hawtin found this out while being himself in the DJ booth at the famous techno music nightclub in Berlin, Berghain.

First of all, let’s start with working DJ Richie Hawtin, who even though didn’t get a personalized DJ review like others did on WorkingDJ.com, has been mentioned before. If you know anything about techno music and digital DJs who use laptops and DAWs to make their mixes, then you surely heard of DJ Richie Hawtin, one of the most well known digital DJs who made it to the spotlight. As far as his work goes, DJ Richie Hawtin is best known for a sort of abstract and minimalistic sound that comes out of his Plastikman moniker, which he continued to use until in the mid 2000s.

Eventually, working DJ Richie Hawtin preferred his own name instead of a moniker and techno music fans definitely know him as DJ RIchie Hawtin, a minimal techno mixing DJ who does most of his work on laptops, DAWs and generally in a digital manner rather than using the good old DJ setup. Truth be told, if there’s one kind of music that’s best suited to being produced, handled or mixed with laptops and computers, that’s techno, so Richie Hawtin’s choice comes as fairly obvious. As far back as 1998, DJ Richie Hawtin had already established his own label, the Minus Records which at first he used mainly as a launchpad for his own DJ projects but lately has become more and more involved in other things as well. For instance, DJ Richie Hawtin was the first working DJ to release a Twitter application through which he could broadcast his tracklist from his gigs online.

Techno working DJ Richie Hawtin was thrown out of the Berghain nightclub in Berlin this weekend

Back to the Berghain techno nightclub in Germany, that place has got a fame of its own, and like all things German, it has to do with order and discipline, although those are not the first words coming to mind in a nightclub where people usually come to jump around and dance. But Berghain is best known for a very strict and heavily enforced door policy, led by a tattooed face bouncer leader of whom you wouldn’t want to get on the bad side. It’s not clear how or why an entire group of people in Berghain, including DJ Richie Hawtin, were ejected from the club this weekend, but we can all assume the words "questionable behavior" to come into play, whatever that means.

At any rate, the working DJ is really not very satisfied by the event, as he posted himself on Twitter, using some harsh language at times: "U know what, BERGHEIM is a great club once you are inside, but why does the door policy have to be so fucking ridiculously hard. Come on guys, you have a great club but don’t act so egotistically cool. We would all love to play and work with you, but you need a serious atitude adjustment!!! Good luck and remember those who have been supporting your scene before you even opened.".
