Gemini iCDJ Product Review

Is the iCDJ Worth the Money?

Its been a while since I’ve written a workingDJ post on Gemini’s DJ equipment. Today, I feel inspired to say a few words (some good, some bad) about this DJ supplier (which I highly recommend for those who are pinching pennies) and a particular design of theirs: the iCDJ. These days, any piece of technology with "i" at the beginning makes my mouth water; the iPhone, iTunes, iPod, and even Gemini’s iTrax. I wonder if their iCDJ has what it takes to keep this little tradition of mine alive. What I–and I’m sure many other working DJs–would like to know is this: is Gemini’s iCDJ mouth watering? Is it worth the purchase? Let’s find out.

The iCDJ is a slot loading tabletop CD player from Gemini that can be used for at home and professional uses. It enables ease of use for all working DJs, thanks to its soft touch jog wheel and light touch buttons. It comes with an array of basic (but not necessarily noteworthy) features, such as pitch bend, digital output, good sound, an anti-shock RAM buffer memory and much more. Not a lot can be said about the design; if white is your preferred color for DJ equipment, then you’ll fall in love with the iCDJ’s snow white chassis that’s sleek, but not wholly durable. A great function in this CD player is its ability to protect working DJ’s discs with a full slot-in mechanism. Now for the juicy part: the features of the iCDJ tabletop CD player.

Gemini’s iCDJ features:

  • D-R Compatible
  • Anti shock using RAM buffer memory
  • Shot in mechanism with red LED display
  • Fully programmable direct access keypad
  • Single auto-cue/continous play mode
  • Seamless looping with reloop
  • Pitch bend via jog wheel or buttons
  • Three mode time selection
  • Frame accurate search
  • Large Red backlit LCD display
  • Coaxial RCA digital output
  • Rubber jog wheel with finger grips
  • Variable pitch control with ranges of 4%, 8% & 16%

What can’t be disputed about the iCDJ? Its features offer a ton of choices, and that’s never a bad thing. On top of that, the sound surely beats the asking price. Working DJs would think, with a low price like $339.95 MSRP and much lower when you search for good deals, the sound would lack in quality. Well, it doesn’t. That’s one of the good things about Gemini; they know how to offer much, yet ask for little. With that been said, don’t expect the sun, the moon and the stars from the iCDJ. It’s not ugly, it’s not bad, and it’s definitely not great. It’s right in the mediocre center. Definitely a "safe" purchase. To be honest, I think this CD player will be the perfect Christmas present for a bedroom DJ this holiday season.
