The PR35 DJ microphone is extra large performance in a hand held package
As a working DJ, you may not have heard of Heil Sound before, and it’s really a shame, I tell you. When you find out that Heil Sound is one of the most important DJ microphone manufacturer across the gamut, you can’t help but try to compare them to what you know or heard of. DJ equipment reviews will end up pitting together companies like MXL with Heil Sound, without knowing the full history of the later. Since its conception in 1966, Heil Sound led the way to the innovative live sound industry with major names as clients and some major accomplishments as well (won the first ever Pioneer Award and was the first DJ product manufacturer to be invited in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame). The PR35 DJ microphone goes to show that even with the big history behind, Heil Sound keep up with the times too.
The PR35 DJ microphone, like the Heil Sound mother company, is designed to run the whole gamut, covering pretty much all your needs in the musical and voice field. The three main concepts Heil Sound had in mind for the PR35 were commercial broadcast, recording and live sound reinforcement applications. No doubt any working DJ can find he needs the PR35 for one or more of his activities, since it basically does great whenever a smooth flat response over a wide frequency range is required. And when you’re a working DJ, smooth, flat and wide become some of your all time favorite words.
So what is it about the PR35 that makes it so special, not to mention justifies a price officially listed at $299 (although you could easily drop $50 off that if you know where to look)? Well, to go straight for the deal closer, working DJs should know that the PR35 is special, as it incorporates the largest dynamic element for any handheld DJ microphone out there.

Heil Sound followed up by combining a special magnet structure with a large aluminum 1 1/2" low mass voice coil assembly to produce exceptional sound quality for both your track or voice recordings. A carefully placed hum bucking coil removes those never ending worries that you’re using your DJ microphone too close to your DJ monitors or other equipment, and you’ll end up with a distinct humming in your final sound. Special attention from Heil Sound makes the PR35 produce a very linear cardioid pattern which, combined with the wide 40Hz – 18kHz frequency range results in extreme articulation and detail in your recordings, whatever their purposes is.
Here’s the other main features working DJs will want to look out for in the PR35 DJ microphone:
- 40Hz to 18kHz frequency range
- very flat sound over the wide frequency range, equaling in great detailed recordings of any kind
- arguably the PR35 is the best vocal DJ microphone out there
- but also one of the most versatile ones, suitable for all areas of a working DJ’s and mobile DJ’s life
- three position roll off switch for convenience, from flat to -3 dB and -6 dB roll off
- rubberized coating and included with a microphone clip mountable on any 5/8" mic thread
Although very complex in itself, the PR35 DJ microphone is a friend for starter DJs too, as you can hardly go wrong with it. The PR35 can be used in extreme high level of sound pressure and it practically immune to overload conditions, not to mention the inexistent off-axis coloration due to the unwanted audio rejection from the cardioid pattern. All in all, a DJ microphone made for the best working DJs, but interestingly flexible for mobile DJs or even starter DJs too.
