The Eigenharp Alpha

The Eigenharp Alpha is thought to be the most expressive electronic instrument ever
People in general like innovations, especially when it makes their lives easier (although some could say too easy of a life is a bad thing). But in the world of music, live performance, working DJs always struggling to find new sound for their mixes or producers who are constantly developing their styles, new always represents a new challenge, a challenge to include that something into your act and make it into a truly remarkable piece (like the ST 150 DJ turntable reviewed here). The Alpha from Eigenharp/Eigenlabs is a remarkable piece from the start, and it will take centerstage in all live music if working DJs and musicians adopt it.
Of course that for an innovation to get the attention it needs, some title always helps and the Eigenharp Alpha has a most impressive one : the most expressive electronic instrument ever made. It looks pretty intimidating at first sight and people will definitely have to struggle in mastering the Eigenharp Alpha, but the possibilities are limitless once you get the hang of it, because Alpha practically combines different musical instruments all into one (check the following video for a presentation of the Eigenharp Alpha).
This makes the Eigenharp Alpha a very versatile musical instrument, and although working DJs have their DJ turntables as music gods, anybody who does live music performance now only has one thing to worry about: getting and learning the Eigenharp Alpha and you’re free to play whatever and improvise to your heart’s desire. Not to mention the Alpha offers a whole new range of sounds to producers and studio DJs who work on getting tracks and beats out from behind the studio DJ equipment.
It would take me a week to just scratch the surface of what the Eigenharp Alpha has to offer in terms of music and different sounds, but here’s a quick breakdown of that in hope that it will give musicians a taste:
- the Eigenharp Alpha has 120 highly sensitive and uniquely designed playing keys
- 12 percussion keys
- 2 strip controllers, one on each side of the Alpha
- a bidirectional and removable breath pipe(sensitive to blown and drawn breaths)
- multiple foot pedals
- but the Eigenharp Alpha is an extremely modern musical instrument with headphones output
- microphone input and preamp
- internal software that works only on Macs for now and that allows playback, common software plugins into your Alpha, soundfonts or MIDI instruments connections
- and an array of accessories like straps, connecting cablecarry bag or base station
