The S-Curve 131 is the best option for a single rackspace one band EQ

As far as I know, I haven’t at all written about Samson DJ products until now, although they bring an impressive array of DJ equipment to the table. The reason why Samson is keeping mainly quiet in the DJ equipment reviews and on the DJ market is because it’s not really their main thing, as they started out 26 years ago making microphones and they evolved into a mostly wireless solutions company. While such audio products are used by DJs as well, they are not targeting only DJs like many of the brands working DJs know today. The S-Curve 131 equalizer is one of their products which is getting more use by working DJ than other Samson equipment.

If you’d like, the DJ brand that comes to mind that most closely resembles Samson is Behringer (read my Behringer DJ product reviews here), which happens to be one of my favorite audio brands today. However, none of the two is a DJ only company.

The S-Curve 131 is pretty straightforward as a DJ equalizer and a DJ product, sporting proudly the title of single channel 31 band EQ. It’s most easily comparable to the 131 graphic EQ from DBX, of which I wrote a DJ product review before. Although the S-Curve 131 EQ (link to PDF manual) seems like it appeals more to newcomers to the field of equalizing and playing with their final audio signal output, it’s actually a complex DJ product suitable for professional working DJs too.

The S-Curve 131 gives the DJ precise tonal control over their final (or one of their) mono channel, offering the entire 31 band EQ graphic features so widely used nowadays. The sliders are center detented and have LED illumination which makes the S-Curve 131 easy to work with in the darker environments of clubbing. Which is just great, as the low noise circuitry used for the S-Curve 131 EQ allows it to be used in a lot of DJ applications, including live performance in front of an audience (which in the case of the DJ is in dark night clubs mostly), but also for broadcasting or recording situations.

Some of the most important characteristics of the S-Curve 131 DJ equalizer in this DJ product review are:

• its 1/3 octave equalizing capabilties
• constant Q circuits allowing for low noise functioning
• LED illuminated faders and VU meter
• switchable 6 dB or 12 dB filter
• balanced inputs and outputs in the form of 1/4" and XLR connectors on the rear panel
• and on the front panel are the 31 EQ faders, the low cut filter, cut only, range and bypass switches

Finally, the S-Curve 131 EQ only takes up a single rackspace in your DJ setup and is at the dimensions working DJs would expect from their single channel EQs. It’s also definitely very portable although if I would be a mobile DJ, a DJ rack mountable EQ would be the least of my worries. Otherwise, Samson made their S-Curve 131 into a flexible DJ equalizer, great for DJs who know what they want from their DJ product. It also looks great with the light blue chassis, rather than the regular mountable EQ black.
