DJ Jazzy Jeff in DJ Hero

by Marius on Aug.04, 2009, under News

DJ Jazzy Jeff is the newest top DJ to join the celebrities featured in the DJ Hero video game

I told you in a previous post of mine that as time goes by and we get closer to the actual release date of the major two games about DJs and DJ-ing, things are going to start to heat up. Well we’re now in the final yards of the competition between Scratch: The Ultimate DJ and Activision’s DJ Hero, which is going to be officially on later this year.

In the meanwhile, Activision shows it masters the tactics of starting a fire and stirring a crowd about their products, and not long ago I wrote a post about what was then the latest addition to the playable DJ Hero, two original mixes from Black Eyed Peas and Kid Cudi. But that was yesterday in the fast moving world of advertising, and today Activision brings DJ Jazzy Jeff as the latest top DJ to join the ranks of playable characters and top DJs in the game.

This has been a controversial matter for some musicians who have refused having their names in any sort of music game, probably threatened by the very idea, but DJ Jazzy Jeff appreciates the opportunity and takes it more as a chance to influence and inspire, rather than a threat: "This is going to be the way for me to inspire a whole new fleet of DJs to follow in my footsteps," not to mention the guy is also seriously modest about it, saying that this move is probably the biggest thing that ever happened in his long career. In all honesty, DJ Jazzy Jeff steps up in the DJ Hero game along some huge names of music, like :

  • DJ Shadow
  • DJ Z-Trip
  • Grandmaster Flash
  • DJ AM
  • also, Activision had DJ Jazzy Jeff perform some all new exclusive mixes for DJ Hero, so fans will be entertained with: Shout from Tears for Fears vs Eric B Is President from Rakim
  • and Rock The Bells from LL Cool J vs Bittersweet Symphony from Aranbee Pop Symphony Orchestra

DJ Jazzy Jeff as a playable character in DJ Hero

That’s some pretty sweet exclusive content for the first serious DJ game, and DJ Jazzy Jeff also counts on the experience being close to the real life mixing. Not only is he going to get and play the game (supposedly using his own character, I guess) but he says that if you get really good at DJ Hero, take a chance, get a DJ turntable and a DJ mixer and try it out on the real thing because you may definitely have a career ahead.

You can see the original interview from DJ Jazzy Jeff mixed in with some cool DJ Hero game footage here, and you tell me if that doesn’t make you want to go out and start mixing now. With all the classy performances and the top DJs Activision is apparently squeezing into DJ Hero, one can only wonder what are they keeping for the inevitable follow ups and add-ons? Not sure, but hopefully it’s as good as this first DJ Hero sounds like.
