"She"jays don’t have to be good?
Does a chick DJ have to be good or look good to land a gig?
I’m a major advocate when it comes to promoting females in the DJ industry. It’s a very spartan, very masculine world that I wouldn’t mind seeing "bedazzeled" with the colorful jewels only the female persuasion can offer. I’ve written a workingDJ post about females being a rarity in the DJ community, and just like then, I still want to see some ladies at the deck. I want any girl who’s reading this post to think: "I can be a successful DJ, with or without the hooters!"
Because I’m so passionate to see women where men have dominated, and know that they got there because of skill, I feel obliged to get a certain matter off my chest: does a female DJ have to be good, or just look good to land a gig? I ask this because the majority of people I know believe in this: "To play at a club, shejays don’t have to be great DJs; they can be average-hell, they could even be 100% dismal. They just can’t be average, or dismal, in terms of physical appeal." Essentially, the Britney Spears rule applies in this situation: you don’t need the talent, just the beauty.
I’ve always been aware of the fact that a handful of club owners will hire female DJs because it will, most likely, solicit a larger crowd. It’s a change of scenery, which is always nice from the dreary scene one looks at time after time. What I didn’t know, however, was that other people (even those outside the Deejaying community) have the gull to agree with my initial question. They honestly believe a female working DJ doesn’t need the basic knowledge of mixing at the decks…so long as they take their hooters with them.
DJ Mystique: A shejay who has proved beauty isn’t everything at the decks

It’s these beliefs of…what’s the word?…prejudice(!!!) that will infuriate even the most tolerant people (ie, me). For one, I’ve seen plenty of good female DJs, and I’ve written about some, too. Do I believe that, for the most part, a girl has to look good in order to get booked? No, not for the most part. I think everyone knows that, if you don’t have the chops, the physical appeal isn’t going to get you gig after gig; knowing this is just common sense, right? So obviously, those who say more than half the female working DJs you see at clubs are average, are incorrect.
If you’re a male working DJ who still believes women can be average mixers but need to have tens across the desirability board to land a job, then I say go to a few clubs where you know female DJs will most likely be playing. See at leat TEN different female DJs, rate which ones were good, which were bad, and see if the real DJs outweigh the pretty phonies. Maybe this isn’t an accurate poll, but it’s a start.
As for me, I still believe in the fact that female DJs shouldn’t be afraid to play a man’s game in, no doubt, a man’s world. Whether it’s true that females land more gigs because of their gender, or not, do whatever makes you happy. And I also still believe in the following phrases: "If you got it, flaunt it", "shake what your mama gave you", etc, etc. Basically, if you have the talent and the looks, work them both. If you have the looks and the passion, but not the talent, work with what you have. If "what you have" happens to be two large pockets supporting fatty tissue (yup, that’s what boobs are), make sure to shake them a little more than others when you’re spinning tracks.
