DJ AM’s Gone Too Far airs on MTV

MTV finally puts the late DJ AM’s drug addiction show Gone Too Far on the screens
Though DJ AM’s untimely death was a blow to everybody who knew the man, not to mention the entire DJ-ing and music scene in the U.S.A., MTV kept their word and went on to air the late DJ’s show where he confronts young people about their drug addiction problems, trying to get them out of that loop. Now if Adam Goldstein was still alive and well, spinning every Friday night at Rain nightclub, where his main residency was, me, like most people, would have nothing against the Gone Too Far show. But with the DJ dying of a drug overdose himself, after what seems to be a tragic comeback from some painkiller drugs, still airing the show seems a bit ironic, to say the least.
But in all fairness, MTV did agree with Adam Goldstein’s family about the details of airing Gone Too Far and they reached a satisfactory conclusion, as a result this last Monday, on the 12th, the first of eight episodes hit the airwaves all throughout America. Seeing as I’m not living in the U.S. at the moment, I wasn’t able to watch the first show, and all I have to show for it is this trailer from MTV, which was supposed to get people to watch the show.
The whole thing does reek of exploitation just a little bit, as DJ AM’s character seems to come as a sort of savior for those young people, trying to spend some time with them and helping them leave the drugs behind. In truth, there’s no better person to help somebody out of a drug addiction than a former drug addict who’s been through it all and managed to even succeed in life, like DJ AM did, so the character choice was great by MTV, as Goldstein was reportedly off drugs as far as 11 years back. Though you can’t be sure anymore anyway, since he did also die because of the same problem.
Also, there’s the other issue of exploiting not only DJ AM’s death, but the lives of the people who were caught on tape, with their drug addiction problem being stated loud and clear. I don’t know what their incentive is to appear on MTV in such a way, but I suppose the television has release agreements for each and every one of them to keep any legal issues at bay. At any rate, I would personally think twice about having that part of my life (if I had one) filmed, documented and aired on a national and international television. It goes without saying that those are not the best times you’ve ever seen, and you could do better on camera.
DJ AM’s intentions were without a doubt the best, and he of all people knew what drugs can do to you, so there’s no doubt in my mind that he really tried to make people realize that for themselves. Potentially some of them would even have their eyes opened and think long and hard about what they’re doing, but putting such a show, in the style of Gone Too Far, on TV, not only doesn’t seem to benefit any of those involved, but also lets the public scrutiny have its way with them…and public opinion isn’t all that pink and favorable for people who’ve fallen into this problem.
In conclusion, if you missed DJ AM any bit by now, you’ve got a chance to see him every Monday, for a remaining 7 episodes, at MTV at 10 pm, I think it was in Gone Too Far. He’s not going to mix or DJ though.
