DJ Elle

From New York, DJ Elle’s now mixing in Miami

It’s true that most DJs are men, and in the music industry, the position where women have the upper hand is probably just that last one, before it all goes to the public. If we’re talking videos, even more so, you’re going to see a whole lot of women (and all of them models of some sort) even though men probably initiated, worked on and finalized the idea. But let’s face, women sell better, and women sell better to women too (as women are arguably a bigger part of the consumer populations than males are).

In a situation like this, it’s surprising to see a woman who either had a passion or just was determined enough to make it on her own in a business, especially one that is so male dominated as the DJ industry. Nevertheless, they’re DJs just as much as the next guy (or gal) and deserve the same treatment. The reason why for me personally this is just my first post about a female DJ is simple, there’s just not that many of them hanging around to write about in comparison to men. But one that does hang around is DJ Elle. And she hangs only between the best cities, switching New York with Miami and vice versa. There’s always DJ Baby Anne, about whom you can read here as well.

DJ Elle started out as one of many New York DJs and has been spinning in the Big Apple for a while now, certainly getting the mentality that comes with the city. That helped her in succeeding in Miami, a city where DJs dominate the clubs, and when you see her list of gigs and DJ residencies held, you know it’s not just a rocket DJ. Recently DJ Elle seems to have switched her homes, as Miami brags that it stole her from the NYC night clubs for good.

DJ Elle knew that making it in a DJ city like Miami, where all the big faces hang out, wasn’t going to be easy so she needed the best background in New York to even get her shot. And so she did, some of her most prominent residencies being Limelight or Tunnel, and from there she moved on to the likes of the Gallery Bar, Gold Bar and Sway. This opened her way to basically all the clubs in the country and she mixed in Miami for the first time at Buck 15, which is where all the right people of Miami music get together. Since January, DJ Elle also holds a residency on Thursdays at Catalina, where she switches with Miami’s own DJ Self Born.

As far as the music and beats go, DJ Elle is a self declared open format DJ, with preferences for everything rap. Even so, judging from her gigs and style, you soon come to realize that DJ Elle likes hip hop the most, especially the new kind, although she will throw an older piece in there as well, to keep things balanced. What surprises in DJ Elle’s sets is that there’s always the "AHA!" moment to look forward to, as she often slips in an unexpected track in between her regular hip hop beats.

For a little hear DJ Elle yourself, the recommended way to go is her Soundtrack To A Heist: The Best Of Guy Ritchie mixtape, where not only the inspiration of putting together classics with crime shows through, but also some pretty interesting mash up skills. Here’s DJ Elle’s top 5 tracks list, as she plays her sets nowadays. It may provide some inspiration for you working DJs out there, and take it from me, don’t be ashamed to be inspired by this girl:

  • Swag Surfin by F.L.Y.
  • Life Of The Party from Jackson 5 (maybe because of the king of pop’s demise)
  • Cheap And Cheerful by Fake Blood
  • Be Worried from Swizz Beats  and Nas
  • and Hit It On The Road from The-Dream
