Numark Scratch System

A DJ package you can count on

I haven’t talked about a solid DJ package in a while, and I also haven’t mentioned a lot on traditional vinyl turntables, either. Both are equally important in the DJ community. On one hand, you have this sweet little package designed by one of the top DJ suppliers, and on the other hand, you have tradition. You have the vinyl, not the vinyl emulation, that you can scratch and make some real good noise with. So, taking care of two things at one time, I (and of course Numark) introduce the Numark DJ in a Box V.5.

Like almost every other DJ package on the planet, it’s designed to fit the needs of bedroom DJs, as it harnesses simplicity, a combination of everything bedroom DJs need but may not know they need, and poor material with a nice low price so every bedroom DJ will come to grips with the fact that, later down the road, they will need to upgrade. As far as the "cliche" version of a DJ package goes, Numark’s DJ in a Box V.5 is above par. What you get out of the V.5 package is:

• 2 TT1550 belt drive turntables
• DM950 2 channel mixer
• HF125 dual headphones

If you’re a working DJ who’s not heavy into scratching, then I highly recommend you check out this package.

2 TT1550 turntables: Personally, I say that the creme of the crop is in the TT1550 turntables. For working DJs who are just starting out, you won’t be disappointed with them. They’re very easy to understand, and although it’s made of plastic, these tables are also pretty sturdy. If you plan on "learning" the ropes for a couple years, they’ll endure the abuse until you need an upgrade. The tables are beltdrive, not direct, but it’s not all downhill from there, as it has many good features. Like esthetics, for one, and durability. Another thing it lacks in, however, is the ability to scratch effectively. Remember how I said if you’re not heavy into scratching, this is the package for you? Never forget that remark. If you do, you’ll get a box of DJ disapointment.

DM950 2 channel mixer: This is as "basic" as it gets. The DM950 is a two chanel mixer with equalizers on both channels and slide style cueing, as Numark states. It’s good looking, but like the turntables, it’s made out of plastic. Unlike the tables, it doesn’t feel as durable. So do I recommend hours ontop of hours of mixing? Not so much, because I question how much this mixer can withstand. However, it serves its purpose beautifully. It was designed for bedroom DJs to understand the layout and functions of a mixer. The DM950 is remarably easy to understand. You’ll learn it faster than cursive, that’s for sure.

HF125 dual headphones: Numark threw in a nice pair of 7 position headphones, equipped with flexibility and desirability. Like the other equipment you’ll find in this box, it’s made of plastic. But these headphones far surpass most DJ expectations. They have a very crisp, clear sound that you’ll find to your liking, and flexibility that makes them easy to travel with. Still, don’t kid yourself into thinking you can keep them for years down the road. Yes, you may love them, yes, they may be nice and affordable, but yes, you will definitely need an upgrade.

Overall, the Numark DJ in a Box V.5 is every bedroom DJs dream setup. You can’t ask for anything more basic, more easy to use and more affordable than this package.
