Alesis TransActive 50

The TransActive 50 is a compact, lightweight, but multi-purpose and adaptable amplification system
Alesis is a DJ brand dedicated to an entire range of DJ products, and sure enough DJ equipment reviews started popping out, because dedication leads to appreciation and ultimately fame and a name for yourself. Alesis has been through this process and is now enjoying the fruits of its labor, so to speak, in that it doesn’t need presentations anymore and working DJ will usually know Alesis DJ products and what they can bring into the mix. Personally, I like the clean look and sharp design most of the Alesis DJ products have, not to mention a quality fit for a working DJ. And even if Alesis is involved in many different fields of the DJ business, they have some DJ products that almost cross boundaries and are hard to include in any one place. Such is the TransActive 50 … speaker, I suppose I could say, although it’s not entirely accurate.
At any rate, before anything else, the more curious ones of you can certainly check back on previous Alesis DJ product reviews and see what going on. Take, for instance, the MultiMix 8 FireWire mixer, which gave me a hard time writing a DJ equipment review for, with all the features and all. Getting back to the TransActive 50, Alesis define it as a "compact multi-purpose amplification system", in that it’s fit for a mobile DJ, it can act as a portable PA system but can also rock the crowd if needed through internal amplifiers. The design is really well thought out and as usual, Alesis impresses with the TransActive 50 looking really good, with rounded corners, black hard molded casing and even a cool blue LED light placed above the panel knobs to no only look great in low light, but also let the working DJ see what’s going on.
Power-wise is where the compromises have been made with the TransActive 50, as it’s running on a 2 channel amplifiers at 50 watts, but it is indeed a worthy option for the mobile DJ. The casing is lightweight yet durable, with a molded body and a convenient built in handle slot just to make a mobile DJ’s life a little easier. Otherwise, the TransActive 50 DJ equipment reviews mention dimensions of 10.2” x 12.5” x 10.0” or 25.9 x 31.8 x 25.4 cm (WxHxD) and a weight of 13.5 lbs or 6.2 kgs, which makes it a pretty portable option for a PA system. Fact is the TransActive 50 is ideal for a small keyboard DJ setup amplification or as a vocal PA.

Even so, TransActive 50 is flexible enough to be used in other DJ applications as well, and working DJs can use the stereo link feature to share the same audio bus between 2 TransActive 50s, thus offering now 100 watts of power and 4 stereo inputs, which makes a pretty good option for even clubbing or small studio amplification. In recognition of this potential use, Alesis even fitted their TransActive 50 with a stand mount on the bottom, just so mobile DJs can easily take it up for live stage performances.
Another worthy feature of the TransActive 50 (link to PDF overview request page) is the presence of a dedicated 3 band EQ in the master section, along with rotary selectable digital sound effects, but let’s check out the overview for a more detailed look:
- as usual 3 band EQ on the TransActive 50 means the option of independently adjusting lows, mids or highs in your tracks, now straight from the PA system
- the sound effects have 3 presets that a working DJ can choose from: reverb, chorus and delays, all in 28 bit quality
- channel 1 of the TransActive 50 features a XLR microphone input and a 1/4" stereo input
- while channel 2 brings 2 other 1/4" stereo inputs to the party
- now for the amplification itself, TransActive 50 is pushed by a 5.5 inch LF woofer
- and a 1 inch tweeter that allows it to reproduce a full range of sounds
- frequency response of between 50 Hz and 20 kHz
TransActive 50 DJ equipment reviews can’t let out the headphone output and also, an important aux RCA input for additional DJ products such as CD or MP3 players. This really makes the TransActive 50 a worthy amplification solution for the mobile DJ, trading just a bit of power for mobility and flexibility. As such, TransActive 50 won’t really work for any large stage DJ situations, but for a mobile DJ on the road or for smaller live performances, it’s more than recommended.
