The GPA 1000 DJ amplifier offers starter DJ price for working DJ performance

Gemini has a history of offering quality DJ product to working DJs around the world without breaking their banks, although as you get higher in the DJ equipmentseries and performance starts climbing, that price will follow the same trend, but that’s a fact all of us have to live with. The Gemini DJ product reviews also mark the same point whenever talking about DJ mixers, DJ turntables or even speakers. One thing Gemini isn’t all that well known for is their DJ amplifiers, of which surprisingly, they’ve got 2 or 3 different series going at the moment. Being sort of an intro to the Gemini DJ amplifiers reviews, we’ll start off easy, with what’s probably the most basic starter DJ amp they have to offer, the GPA 1000.

For a quick view on what Gemini is more famous for, take a look at one of my previous DJ product reviews for the TT 02 MK2 DJ turntable, which keeps the Gemini TT series turntables alive. But now onto rocking the crowd and pushing that mix up with the GPA 1000 DJ amp. I said this is starter DJ material, and it’s definitely suited if you’re new to using amplifiers in your gigs or at home, for your mixes. That’s mainly because the GPA 1000 isn’t that heavy on your pocket, and you could probably get one for around 160$ if you screen the market. However, the GPA 1000 has enough to satisfy the more demanding and professional working DJs although it’s very easy to work with (and look at). For space, the GPA 1000 is a relatively small DJ amplifier, occupying 2 units of rack space, with exact dimensions of 19" W x 10.75" D x 3.5" H (or 483 x 273 x 89 mm in metric) and a weight of 16.3 lbs or 7.4 kgs. While not the lightest DJ product out there, the GPA 1000 is definitely suited for the mobile DJ as well, keeping the Gemini performance in a small package.

Also, the steel reinforced chassis on the GPA 1000 means that this is a piece of DJ equipment that won’t go down easy, despite the rigors of the mobile DJ’s life. For as small a DJ product as the GPA 1000, it can sure pack a punch as DJ amplifier, bringing high output to boost up your mixes and send them straight to your speakers or monitors, clipping free. The power we’re talking about in this DJ product review of the GPA 1000 comes in at 70 watts at 8 ohms with a 140 watts peak and 90 watts at 4 ohms with a 180 watts peak. Working DJs have definitely seen more powerful DJ amps out there, but keep in mind that the GPA 1000 is more suitable for starter DJs in the amplifying world and it’s also the smallest in the GPA series DJ amplifiers from Gemini. You can definitely go higher, all the way to the 300 watts at 4 ohms of the GPA 4000 but be prepared to pay the price.

So for a new, gentle learning curve in DJ amplifiers that won’t turn you upside down and shake the last coin out of you, but still offers performance that’s capable of boosting your gigs, the GPA 1000 is a definite possibility. Let’s see an overview of the main features of the GPA 1000 DJ amplifier (link to PDF manual) now:

  • for inputs, the GPA 1000 comes with 1/4" TRS and XLR balanced/unbalanced ins for maximum flexibility and compatibility
  • the outputs are either 1/4" or Speakon compatible
  • the GPA 1000 operates in stereo, parallel mono or mono bridge modes
  • a nice and wide frequency range from 30 Hz to 50 kHz
  • and a respectable signal to noise ration of 100 dB at 8 ohms
  • also, the GPA 1000 comes with a ground lift switch
  • and the output technology is bipolar for great sound quality

I’ll finish the GPA 1000 DJ product review by looking at its protection systems, which is admittedly, where this DJ amp takes a break, meaning more worries for the working DJ. Don’t get me wrong, the GPA 1000 is optimized for efficiency and low temperature, with a front-to-rear airflow design complete with a cooling fan and also a dual aluminum extrusion heatsink with the output transistors directly mounted, but I’m talking about those bad times when bad comes to worse and somehow the cooling and heatsink aren’t enough. That’ pretty much where the GPA 1000 will come down, taking the working DJ with it. In the end, it’s a DJ’s decision if he risks it on the GPA 1000, which even is offers good entry level performance, requires some extra care.
