The DJ1 Pro DJ headphones, pro and working DJ in the same place
Ultrasone should be right up there with the biggest names in DJ headphones manufacturing. Stop thinking always Sennheiser, Sony or Pioneer, because you’ll be missing out. Ultrasone really knows what to do to make their DJ headphones a DJ product to be reckoned with, and working DJs should appreciate the utmost care that goes into each and every model of DJ equipment that comes from this German manufacturer. I already talked about the Proline 650 DJ headphones before, and you can get a good glimpse of what we’re in for this time by reading that. Those were professional headphones, made for people wearing them a long time, but not necessarily for working DJs, so I chose a compromise, the DJ1 Pro purely DJ headphones, which is where the Proline series meets the DJ series of Ultrasone headphones.
Working DJs don’t need to expect a whole lot of diifference between the two models, as there aren’t many. Once you get to a quality as high as the Proline 650 and the Proline series, there isn’t much room to improve, so the DJ1 Pro DJ headphones kind of remind us that great features never go out of style. The main difference is that the DJ1 Pro are professional DJ headphones made for the working DJ, who needs to monitor and listen to the highest quality sound for a successful mix. The basics are the same though, and they include sealed back ear cups for an added degree of outside noise reduction, the MU metal shielding which reduces by 98% the level of radiation that every DJ headphone puts its owner through and the S-Logic sound features, which is probably the greatest of Ultrasone’s inventions.
The S-Logic sound means that while in all closed back DJ headphones the sound is trapped inside the cups, on the DJ1 Pro the sound is actually let out, it moves outside the little area on a working DJ’s ears, and it gains spacing and distance and a character, really. Wearing the DJ1 Pro actually feels like you’re at where the music was played, because the spatial sensation is so powerful that you actually don’t feel that you have DJ headphones on. This level of quality in DJ products may deconcentrate a working DJ, and really that’s the biggest danger with the DJ1 Pro DJ headphones.

The radiation and electromagnetic pulse is also a thing of the past, although this was mainly a worry for working DJ who REALLY wear their DJ headphones a lot, but all working DJ need to be careful about the health of their ears, as that’s pretty much the organ of their livelihood. The same S-Logic Surround Sound technology comes into action when it comes to safe hearing, as by using the DJ1 Pro, working DJ only have the sensation of loudness. The effect is so great that the sound pressure inside the ear cups is reduced by up to 40% (which usually means around 3 or 4 dB) for the same loudness. While the working DJ will be able to hear just as well as with a higher volume that might otherwise damage his ear, the DJ1 Pro make sure that this happens in a risk free manner, at a lower true volume.
The other main features and physical characterisitics of the DJ1 Pro DJ headphones are up next:
- the DJ1 Pro come with a new aluminum nameplates which makes them easier to distinguish
- also a new hardcase for easy transportation, as the DJ1 Pro are foldable for the roads and the mobile DJs
- 2 detachable cables for working DJs to use as they see fit: one coiled with a length of over 3 meters, mono/stereo switch, and volume control, and a straight 3 meters one
- gold plated 6.3 and 3.5 adapters
- a spare pair of ear pads, and switching them is really easy on the DJ1 Pro
- frequency range of 10 Hz to 22 kHz
- an impendace of 64 ohms
- the sound pressure level is at 102 dB
- a 50 mm large mylar driver for greater sound impact, which works great for monitoring
- and the ULE technology which applies in the case of the MU metal shielding which makes for a health worry free life of the working DJ
As usual, working DJs who need more details can get them off the Ultrasone website, but all in all, the DJ1 Pro DJ headphones are really where the Proline meets the DJ line, giving them the best of both worlds. Just a great pair of DJ headphones for the working DJ.
