The DM 2.0 DJ microphone has surprising quality for the price

One of the DJ product brands I introduced on WorkingDJ.com is Wharfedale Pro, as a division of Wharfedale. I don’t know if I like the name or the price or the quality or all three things about this company, but I find myself writing about them fairly often , which must mean they’re doing something well. On a closer inspection, I think it’s how easy it is to pick up Wharfedale DJ products and use them professionally. Just like the DM 2.0 version of DJ microphone, which even if it’s the earliest model, is still very dependable and offers surprising quality for a low price. That alone should attract some working DJs on a budget towards the DM 2.0. Another Wharfedale DJ product that’s worth your attention, falling into the same category is the MP 1200 DJ amp, which I covered in a previous post.

But there are other things that recommend the DM 2.0 DJ microphone for big things, although now it’s been upgraded several times by newer versions. First and foremost, the DM 2.0 is built from the basic principle of any microphone, and that’s not to capture any unwanted feedback or sound coming form another part than what’s meant to be recorded. For that purpose, the DM 2.0 features a super-cardioid pattern that’s designed to minimize feedback and basically ignore audio signal that don’t come from right in front of the capsule. That and the fact that DM 2.0 is made for recording very clear and articulate sound, worthy of a studio, should tip working DJs to the fact that this one should be looked at.

Wharfedale Pro DM 2.0 super cardioid unidirectional DJ microphone

A big issue with older versions of microphones, especially for those that were used in other applications that in the DJ studio was the handling noise. Being very close to the actual place of recording, subtle sounds of moving hands on the microphone could make their way into the final recording. DM 2.0 fixes this through proper shock mounting isolation, which basically cuts off any vibrations from under the capsule from making into the recording. This doesn’t mean however, that working DJs should be careful with the DM 2.0, because it’s so fragile and no vibrations must pass through, quite the opposite. The DM 2.0 DJ mic has a body made of a well balanced zinc alloy die cast, which ensure a flawless performance from the DM 2.0 in any application, with or without hand movement.

If you can’t tell from the description this far, the DM 2.0 DJ mic is extremley versatile and suited to a whole range of applications and sounds. In that concern, the DM 2.0 was actually designed to be used at very high SPLs, with the high sensitivity capsule being able to catch extreme nuances of any type of performance in a working DJ’s act. For an added degree of convenience and support, the DM 2.0’s grill is made from regular spring steel construction, but with dent resistance, thus keeping the capsule inside safe even in extreme circumstances. This, along with the tough body and the serious shock mount mean that the DM 2.0 is another DJ product that’s made to last, and chances are working DJs will sooner get a new DJ mic than replace a broken DM 2.0.

Before getting to the financial part, let’s take a look at the main features of the DM 2.0, others than those presents up until now:

  • the DM 2.0 is a unidirectional dynamic microphone that also features great feedback rejection
  • a neodymium magnet which makes for a high output and low distortion of the sound, also adding another 6 dB of sensitivity to the recording
  • an on/off switch, convenient for cutting the recording at the push of a button
  • gold plated XLR connector for maximum quality of transmitted signal and also, great endurance of the jack
  • now onto some technical aspects, the frequency range of the DM 2.0 DJ microphone is from 50 Hz to 17 kHz
  • an impedance of 600 ohms
  • the maximum SPL is higher than 135 dB
  • and a sensitivity of -52 dB

Now the best part about the DM 2.0 isn’t what I just went through, but the pricetag. While you could also get a single DM 2.0 DJ mic, I advice for a pack of three, which comes complete with a tough carrying case and a durable nylon clip, to make for a full package, and the best news is that is all costs just under 40$. Considering this DM 2.0 package is actually a lifetime’s worth of DJ mics, I’d say it’s worth it.
