Laptops Vs Turntables

Laptops Vs. Turntables
Keeping up with today’s hottest trends can be a rewarding journey. We get the knowledge most "old-timers" struggle to learn about, plus we get to have the option of embracing the original style of whatever trend’s bandwagon we’ve hopped onto. The modernized forms of the products we once loved are always more convenient, quicker, more durable and just better over all. But as you all may know, there’s a multitude of bad that comes with never being out-dated.
Why is this done? Because of convenience, easy use, and often, affordability. All of which are completely understandable. Still, don’t DJs miss the feel of the vinyl as its spinning beneath their finger tips? I often wonder this and would like to get a consensus of what disc jockeys out there have to say. Until then, I want to talk about turn tables vs. laptops.
Take a look at the Pro’s and Con’s of Laptops and Turn tables at a glance. I’ll start off with laptops and try to keep it short and sweet:
Pro’s
- Laptops are easy to carry around. No more DJ crates, which is a major plus. Traveling to gigs is less of a hassle.
- The sound of new technology (laptops) is different than the sound of old technology (turn tables). Introducing a new version can be viewed as glamorous by a handful of people, ultimately irritating their curiosity.
- Vinyl breaks easier than laptops
Con’s
- "Spinning" on a laptop looks plain weird; at the clubs, at weddings–wherever.
- "Electronic DJs" may be more creative with technology, but they’ll garner less respect from old school DJs
- Laptops are unique, but not "The Original". 2nd versions are never better than the 1st version
Now for the Turn Tables…
Pro’s
- It is "The Original".
- You’re more involved/more hands-on
- The crowd can get into it easier/feel the artist’s vibe faster
- Better sound–let’s be honest, the laptop can’t spin the way a DJs fingertips can
Con’s
- Vinyl ain’t cheap
- Laptops provide access to incredible installations that provide incredible music/sounds
- Vinyl ain’t cheap…it’s worth saying twice
Before I go, let me say that all DJs are creative and talented no matter what avenue they choose. I personally prefer the sounds of originality than I do technology. Turn tables on the market should never be forgotten.
Here’s a tip to take home with you: If you want to be among the best DJs, be able to master the DJ equipment of both styles.
