Technics, Ortofon & Gemini Slipmats

Slip Into Great Sound & Safe Records

I love slipmats because they reduce friction between the record and the recording platter of a working DJs table without jeopardizing the sound. I also love them because they’re easy to make, but if you can’t make them, they’re easy to find and very affordable when you make the decision to purchase one. With all the positives that come with slipmats, I’ve heard a number of DJs complain about their record skipping or being damaged due to a poor choice in purchasing slipmats. Like every other product on the market, you’ve got to know how to look for slipmats. If you don’t, you may found your records in more trouble than if you hadn’t used the slipmats at all.

Ever heard of Technics, Ortofon, and Gemini? These 3 brands are unbeatable in slipmat designs on the market, which is why I’ve made a seal proof list of ONE slipmat they’ve come out with. I’m not going to say how these brands are all unique in their own way, all affordable if you know where to look, and all reliable once a working DJ has made his/her purchase. Come on; we already know that, right? So I’m just going to get into list.

Technics: Technics has created some of the best turntables on the market. Wouldn’t you think they knew how to make some of the best slipmats as well? If you thought so, you thought right. Not only are Technics slipmats one of the most affordable, they’re also among the most reliable. The RP-WA1200 is a fav of mine because it slides well, has a nice feel and looks awesome. Their self promotion isn’t even subtle, but Technics managed to make it work and look real good.

Ortofon: Ortofon may not be as affordable as Technics, but it is certainly just as reliable. Have you ever seen an Ortofon slipmat? Well, ‘course you have: they’re amazing! These slipmats are easy on the eyes, even easier on the record, and a God sent on the fingers. It doesn’t matter if a working DJ is scratching the crap of their record–it still feels good! My favorite Ortofon slipmat is the Aladdin slipmat–not just because I’m a fan of the fantasy world, but look at that guy…who wouldn’t love that kind of artwork? Ortofon remains, and will always remain, my absolute favorite slipmat designer.

Gemini: Pro DJs might have gotten over the Gemini stage years ago as their skills developed and became more deserving of turntables designed by Numark or Technics. But you still have to love their slipmats. Staying true to form, Gemini is staying as affordable as ever, beating out their competition in terms of pricing. They designed a flawless SM-GSPOT slipmat with their cool G logo smack dab in the center. The design isn’t worth a whole lot of praise–it’s good looking, but not great. Still, a lot of working DJs get slipmats solely for the reliability and durability of this little product. If that’s the case, then you’ll have no problems with Gemini’s SM-GSPOT. Not at all.

I’m always promoting people’s originality. If the slipmats designed by Gemini, Ortofon and Technics seem weak to you guys, definitely go out and make your own. They’re easy. But please DO NOT think you can design a slipmat with low friction/frictionless material because it "Looks so easy". Ortofon, Gemini and Technics only make it look easy. Don’t be stingy: go out and purchase a good pair of slipmats and save yourself the hassle of dealing with records that skip, or worse…throwing out damaged records.
